MembershipYou have to be a member of the music society to take part in any music society groups or to perform in any concerts. Membership costs per year are as follows: Students: £3.00 All students, staff and alumni are welcome, however external members must confirm with the director of music before joining as places for external members are very limited. Students can sign up securely online from the Kent Union website. You can join the music society at any time of the year, however some common sense is required when joining the groups, for instance turning up to your first rehearsal 2 weeks before a concert is not a wise move. You should always contact the music society so that we can advise you when the best time to join that group would be (other than at the beginning of course). It's also worth noting that auditions are only held at the beginning of the year and if you wish to take up an auditioned part you must apply then. Practice roomsEach college has a practice room with a piano. A permit is required to use these rooms and is available at a cost of £5 from the music society office or the music assistant. You don't have to be a member of the music society to get a practice permit. To use the room you simply hand over your permit and ID card to the college receptionist and they will swipe your KentOne card to allow access to the room. There is no booking system, so please do not spend too long in the rooms as it's not fair on other students. Rutherford practice room is the largest and nicest practice room, however it's often busy as it is also used for music lessons and other rehearsals. You are allowed to use any practice room, it doesn't have to be the one belonging to your college. If you live in Parkwood there unfortunately isn't a practice room and you will need to use one of the colleges. The college practice rooms are intended primarily for individual practice and you can't make excessive amounts of noise. If you do want to make a bit more noise (this means brass, drums, amplified instruments and groups) then you can book the OTE Music room (Through the arch at the banks next to hidden the Lloyds cash point). To obtain a pass for the OTE music room you will need to contact the director of music. |
